Du Toit has been included in place of Sharks teammate Butch James, who has been suspended for two weeks after Saturday's disappointing display in victory over France in Durban
James, who earned a bit of a reputation for his kamikaze tackling during the Super 12 was cited by the independent match commissioner for dangerous tackling.
Matfield was included in the original 32-man squad for the training camp in plattenberg Bay but was forced to withdraw after sustaining a seriou knee injury in the Bulls final Super 12 game against the Cats..
According to a Springbok spokesperson the lanky Sharks lock will definitely miss the game against Italy and the verdict on how long he will be out of action will be made at a later stage..
